From Water-Damaged to Rock-Solid: A Lancaster CA Shower Remodel Built to Last Decades
TL;DR
We transformed an outdated, water-damaged tub/shower in Lancaster, CA into a fully waterproofed, structurally sound custom shower with large-format tile, a marble corner bench, mosaic niche, and modern linear layout.
This wasn’t just a tile upgrade.
It was a complete rebuild designed to last for decades.

The Problem: An Outdated Shower Hiding Bigger Issues
At first glance, this Lancaster bathroom looked like many older homes in the area.
Small white square tiles.
A fiberglass tub.
Metal trim.
And years of wear around the plumbing and corners.
But once we looked closer, the real problem showed up.
Cracked grout lines.
Separation at the tub line.
Caulking failure.
Visible moisture damage at the outside wall corner.
Staining along the base of the walls.
That green textured wall outside the tile line?
That gap told the story.
Water had been escaping the system for years.
And when water escapes, it doesn’t forgive.

Why Old Showers Fail
Older tub surrounds were often installed with minimal waterproofing.
Tile and grout are not waterproof.
They are decorative wear surfaces.
Behind them, there must be a properly built moisture barrier or waterproof system.
In many older homes in Lancaster and the Antelope Valley, we see:
No true waterproof membrane
Failing backer board
Rusted fasteners
Soft studs
Mold in corners
Cracked mortar beds
Tub flanges improperly sealed
This shower was ready to be retired.
Step One: Full Demolition
We don’t patch over failure.
We remove it.
The old tile, tub, and wall assembly came out completely.
This allowed us to inspect framing, subfloor, and plumbing.
When you’re rebuilding something meant to last 20+ years, you don’t skip this step.
Solid structure is non-negotiable.

Step Two: Building a Waterproof System (Not Just a Tile Job)
This is where most homeowners don’t see the difference between contractors.
Anyone can set tile.
Very few build showers correctly.
For this Lancaster remodel, we focused on:
Proper wall board installation
Reinforced corners
Fully sealed seams
Waterproofed niche assembly
Integrated shower pan system
Proper slope to drain
The goal is simple:
Water must never reach the framing.
Ever.
That’s how you build something that lasts decades instead of 5–7 years.
The Design Direction: Clean, Modern, and Timeless
Once the structure was right, we moved to the fun part.
The homeowners chose a neutral large-format wall tile in a soft gray tone.
Large-format tile does a few powerful things:
Reduces grout lines
Creates visual height
Feels modern and high-end
Makes cleaning easier
Instead of busy small squares, we installed a horizontal stacked layout.
The room instantly felt wider.
Calmer.
More intentional.

The Feature Band & Niche
One of the design highlights is the horizontal mosaic feature band wrapping the shower.
It carries through the niche and around the walls.
This detail matters.
When a feature band aligns perfectly into the niche and continues around the perimeter, it looks intentional and custom — not pieced together.
The niche itself was fully waterproofed before tile installation.
It includes:
Clean edges
Proper slope
Seam integration
A marble sill for durability
This is where craftsmanship separates itself.

Custom Corner Bench
Instead of leaving the shower as a simple walk-in box, we installed a floating marble corner bench.
This adds:
Practical seating
Visual weight balance
Luxury feel
Long-term durability
The marble top contrasts beautifully against the matte gray wall tile.
It feels substantial.
Not hollow.
Not flimsy.
Built.
Shower Pan & Floor Tile
The shower floor uses a geometric mosaic tile with natural color variation.
Smaller tile on shower floors isn’t just aesthetic.
It allows for:
Proper slope accommodation
Better traction
Clean drain integration
We installed a centered drain with precision layout so cuts are balanced and symmetrical.
That detail may seem small.
But it’s what makes the finished product feel high-end instead of rushed.

From Fiberglass Tub to Custom Walk-In
The transformation here wasn’t just tile.
It was function.
We removed the outdated fiberglass tub and replaced it with a fully tiled, walk-in shower system.
No more metal track.
No more discolored caulking.
No more moisture creeping behind walls.
Instead:
Modern plumbing trim
Dual shower head
Clean valve placement
Solid tile returns
Clean transitions
This is how you modernize a Lancaster home without losing longevity.
Why This Shower Will Last Decades
Because it wasn’t built like the original.
It was rebuilt with:
✔ Proper structure
✔ True waterproofing
✔ Solid framing
✔ Correct slopes
✔ Quality materials
✔ Thoughtful layout
✔ Attention to detail
Tile doesn’t fail.
Improper systems fail.
This one was built to perform.
A Word to Lancaster Homeowners
If your shower looks like the “before” photos:
Cracked grout
Loose trim
Separation at corners
Staining at the base
Caulking that never stays clean
It may not just be cosmetic.
It may be structural.
And catching it early saves money long-term.
A properly rebuilt shower isn’t an expense.
It’s protection for your home.
